A VIRTUAL MUSEUM

INTRODUCTION

Human beings are extremely careless over their ‘heritage’.  Old Grammarians are no different.  Bearing in mind the school probably began life around the middle of the 13th Century, Henry VIII did not help with the dissolution of the monasteries - bearing in mind the close connection with schools and the Abbey.  Then, in the mid 1960s, when most of the Victoria Road property was transferred to the Deer Park complex, it is likely that much of historical value ended up in a skip.  The lost documentation over the years would have made excellent source material for future researchers.

In the absence of much in the way of original source material we rely on the work of historians such as Kennett Beecham’s A History of Cirencester  in 1887 and in 1924 W St. Clair Baddeley’s work of the same title, both of which contain a small amount of detail on the school as well as the town.

Other useful contributions are to be found in copies of The Cirencestrian, the school magazine from 1919 to 1968, and The New Cirencestrian - the more recent magazine of the 1940s Association from the late 1990s to the present time.

Additionally there is correspondence, including the final minute book of the former Old Grammarians Association which was wound up

in 1975.  Afterwards there was a gap of thirteen years before a renewed interest in Old Grammarian matters in 1988.

Cuttings contained in the minutes book consisting of comment by Miss King;

and recording the death of Miss Peach and pupils on the last day of school.

By far the most valuable secondary sources are of more recent vintage.  John Ireland’s and Edwin Cuss’ The History of Cirencester Grammar School and later Mr Cuss’ Looking Back at Cirencester Grammar School, both published in the 1990s, provide the most complete history published to date.

John Ireland’s contribution to the first book is a verbatim record of the thesis he presented to Bristol University

for his M.Litt in Education.  It is an excellent of record of the early history of the school.

Mr Cuss’ contribution is a mainly photographic history of the school from

its penultimate home in Park Lane to its closure at Victoria Road in 1966.

Both books owe their existence to funds raised at the Grand Reunion held in 1993.

Pages containing photographs of headmasters and senior mistresses are shown below:

In 2006 it was decided to begin an Old Grammarian Archive by collecting documents etc and storing them in the strongroom at the Bingham Hall.

The purpose of this on line virtual museum is to share some of the Old Grammarian memorabilia, wherever it is located, to a wider audience of Old Grammarians.

Probably the first extant document, held in the Public Record Office, is a licence dated 1457 from which the history of the school through its benefactor John Chedworth can be traced.  Barely readable, this is the form the document takes:
